Tenor Kurt-Alexander Zeller and pianist Michiko Otaki have been performing together as a recital duo for 23 years and present this musical exploration of the significance of endings and loss as Dr. Otaki retires from the Clayton State Division of Music faculty in May. The program highlights one of the composers they have performed together most often, Franz Schubert, beginning with his exquisitely poignant “Im Abendrot” (“At Sunset”) and continuing through his vivid portraits of the grief-ravaged character of the Harper from Goethe’s seminal Bildungsroman, Wilhelm Meister’s Apprentice Years, to the accepting comfort of his “Litany for All Souls’ Day.” Also featured are Francesco Santoliquido’s Impressionistic settings of Italian translations from Persian mystic poetry and Samuel Barber’s last song compositions, the Three Songs, Op. 45, of 1974, written as he and his longtime companion, the composer Gian Carlo Menotti, closed up and sold Capricorn, the home they had shared for 30 years in Mt. Kisco, New York, ending a significant chapter of their lives together.
