“Hahn conjured into being a cathedral of sound: spacious and full of dazzling beauty.”
— Washington Post
“Goerne displayed complete vocal freedom, some of his high notes… reaching towards heaven.”
— New York Classical
Hilary Hahn returns to the stage and to Spivey Hall for a rare opportunity to hear her in recital and experience an extraordinary collaboration with renowned baritone Matthias Goerne and highly acclaimed pianist Gloria Chien. Goerne’s baritone voice is described as “superb” and “tenderly eloquent,” providing a rich, well-oiled tone that contrasts with Hahn’s technically perfect, beautifully lyrical violin playing.
Central to the program, which will highlight Hahn and Goerne separately and together, is the world premiere of a riveting new work by composer Reena Esmail, co-commissioned by Spivey Hall for Ms. Hahn and Mr. Goerne. Esmail’s work is receiving major attention—she has been a composer in residence at the Seattle Symphony and Los Angeles Master Chorale, and her Concerto for Orchestra will premiere with Yannick Nézet-Séguin and the Philadelphia Orchestra in May 2027.
“Nothing Hahn does is for show. Technique, feelings, heart, and mind are intuitively fused, as Bach always demands.”
— The Times
Reena Esmail’s music is a “duet between traditions” (Los Angeles Times), blending Western classical training with Hindustani influences, drawing musicians from many perspectives into shared creative spaces.
