About the Artist

Hopkinson Smith is “an elegant and genial figure on the platform and a master of his instrument” (Seen and Heard International), “an impressive man with an awe-inspiring body of work who continues to search for that ‘musical spirit’ each time he picks up the lute” (Lute Society of America Quarterly).

“’With any instrument, what one wants to do is find perfect union of physical gesture with musical gesture,’ Smith says. ‘This is the lifelong task of a musician’” (Harvard Magazine).

A consummate interpreter, he can “locate the soul of each piece through the most sophisticated and subtle use of extemporised embellishment you’ll ever hear” (Gramophone).

“Through his creative fantasy and the beauty of his instrument, Hopkinson Smith brings the listener to a refined state of total immersion in the musical and emotional atmosphere of the past, like a fabulous teller of tales” (Corriere della Sera).
